Day 2 - Keld (Yorkshire) to Killin (Scotland)
Day 2 - Keld (Yorkshire) to Killin (Scotland)
Tuesday 10/05/2022
-------------------------
We had an early night and after returning from the very windy Tan Inn, we went straight to sleep. It was nice and cosy in our tents but there was a gale blowing outside with rain and strong gusts. I didn't get too much sleep as my tent was flapping around like crazy....
Still, we woke to a nice morning next to the river and hit the road before 9am riding across the final part of the stunning Yorkshire Dales and onto a Truck stop for fuel and human fuel. After coffee / bacon and egg rolls we were ready to get back on the M6 and get up to Moffat. Konrad will fill-in the details.....
We got off the motorway at Moffat and did a fantastic ride around the area taking-in reservoirs and superb views on the Devil's Beeftub. We then headed north up towards Glasgow, and came off near Kilsyth, heading onto the small roads around the Carron Valley on small B roads while dodging rain and traversing flooded roads. We stopped for fuel Buchlyvie and then carried on to Aberfoyle- then onto the tight roads of the Duke's Pass into the Trossachs. We quickly popped to see Loch Katrin and the Steam paddleboat, then headed across Loch Achray to Callander on another set of twisty roads. We then followed the A84 north and then turned off towards Loch Tay.
We rode into Killin (yes, both Konad and I were both singing "Killin' in the name of") where we decided to call it a day and find somewhere to stay. We found a nice quiet campsite just past the village and rather than faff with tents, we have rented a small wooden hut for £40 where we can cook and have a few drinks, no matter what the weather does. Ossian Golden Ale is amazing by the way. As is Smash and meatballs (when you are hungry).
Some good riding today, the kinds of roads that I wouldn't have enjoyed on my old bike. Scotland is amazing to explore by motorbike, especially if you are willing to take some of the smaller and bumper roads. Difficult to go wrong if you have the time to take the road less travelled.
Tomorrow we head towards the Cairngorms, Balmoral and the ski roads. Looking forward to that, if the weather holds out!
